How to Find Good Keywords for Your Articles and Blog Posts

Seo chart - how to find good keywordsAnyone can throw together a bunch of sentences with keywords, but it takes some real forethought and skill to know how to write the kind of articles that will generate lots of traffic.

Let’s discuss some tips on making your articles outshine others in your niche so that you can capture massive amounts of traffic…

The first thing you must do is your research. You can find good keywords by using Google’s free keyword tool to help you discover what keyword terms people are searching to find sites like yours. It doesn’t do much good to just guess at keywords that you want to rank for. Instead, you must know what buyers are actually searching for and then fill that need.

Next, you will want to create a list of good keywords that will form the basis for your marketing campaign. You will be working down this list of keywords over time, or possibly outsourcing it to your own writers.

Make sure that you always include your primary keywords in the title of your article, the first paragraph and sprinkled at least two more times in your blog posts.  (Don’t over do this…it can look spammy to the search engines.) This helps with search engine optimization and getting your articles or blog posts ranked in Google.

If you’ve chosen some secondary keyword terms, you’ll want to use them in your subheadings and throughout the content. You might want to use one or two of these secondary keywords in your article, but again don’t overdo it…in the marketing world that’s called “keyword stuffing” and looks unnatural to Google.

As you get a little more advanced, take the next step by using your main keyword phrase in your  images. (Just rename your image as your keyword phrase.) Images are great and can draw the attention of your readers, but make sure to tag them properly for better SEO.

Always use keyword loaded anchor text to give yourself a good backlink. In other words, if you are trying to rank for “red widgets“, then you should create an HTML text link using those words to a relevant page or post on your site.

Exta Tips:

**You can use a “related articles” plugin on WordPress that will pull in related content from your own site for your readers. (*I’m currently using the free wp plugin, LinkedWithin) This will help increase viewing of your past content that you’ve written…which is extra exposure for your online business products and services.

**Aim to gain repeat visitors. The best way to do this is to get them on your email list and to fork out high quality content that your readers need…if they visit your site and find lousy content they won’t return.  Offer simple solutions to make their lives easier and help solve their problems and you’ll be in high demand!

I highly recommend that you take advantage of SEO for your online marketing, as it’s FREE traffic to your site.  Click here to learn all you need to know about SEO now.

I write more easily off the top of my head (so to speak), but I definitely need to follow this excellent advice for using keywords in my blog posts. I’m sure I could write a post while it’s fresh in my head, as usual, then adjust it based on keyword research. I’ve always been kind of backwards about my approach to things. :) Thanks for the great tips!

    Susan,
That could definitely work. You still want your content flow to sound natural, and sometimes focusing too much on keywords can hinder that. So, try doing it backwards and see if it helps.
