5 Ways to Create an Effective Online Business

I will be the first to admit that running a successful online business takes more than a few simple steps. However, we all need to start somewhere, and it’s a good idea to have some basic ideas. Once you have a good foundation, you can always build up from there. That being said, it’s also true that every business is different and not everything works for everybody. The final point before we get started is that the internet is constantly changing, so being flexible is a good habit to get into

1. Sell what people want to buy. Depending on the product, you may have to be very cutting-edge. For example, if you are selling SEO services or information, then you have to be up-to-date as search engines change their algorithms frequently. Being behind the curve on something like that will kill your business. On the other hand, if you are selling an “evergreen” product, like a guide to weight loss, then technological changes won’t impact you as much. Though, you should always make sure your information is accurate.

2. Get your own domain and pay for hosting. Free domain names and hosting lack the sense of quality. They may be okay for a hobby site, but if you are trying to run a profitable business you will want something a little more professional. The main reason this is so important is that it gives you complete control of how you display your sales message to potential customers. Free hosting often adds advertising to your site, and because they target that advertising based on the nature of your site, you could be advertising for a competitor.  Free hosting also lacks good support and you don’t want your business site down.

*Note: I’ve got some top notch business domain names available here (just make me a reasonable offer.) For hosting, consider Mom Webs which is so affordable and will offer you really good support for your business website.

3. Create a top notch sales copy. When starting out, you may surprised at the initial cost charged by top copywriters. If there is any way you can afford it, then go with the best you can buy. Excellent sales copy isn’t really an expense, it’s an investment. If you can’t afford one right away, do the best you can. One tip that will help is to focus on the benefits of your offer. Imagine somebody else reading it ans asking “so what?” after every point you make. The answer to that question should become part of your sales copy. Having a great offer means nothing if you can’t convince people it’s worth buying.

4. Generate a steady flow of traffic to your site. No visitors = no sales! You have to get people to your site. It doesn’t matter how good your site looks or how convincing your sales letter is if nobody sees it. There are tons of ways to generate website traffic. You can try both paid or free options, but start by choosing some and using them.

5. Test and track your results. I just mentioned that you can try about any form of traffic generation, but I didn’t say that to be flippant. The trick is to test different methods, and then track the results. This is also true of your sales page, graphics, pricing and anything else that has a variable element to it. Keep testing and tracking; dump what isn’t effective, and keep what works best.

Using these five steps will help you create an effective online business. By following them you will have a firm foundation on which to build your own successful business.
