The 3 Most Common Mistakes In Upselling
Upselling is the sole purpose of making you more money after having already sold a product.
With the right tools and training, anyone can learn how to upsell and make a decent profit. However, there some common mistakes that sales people make when trying to upsell a product and all of them mean a loss in revenue for your business if not addressed and corrected.
So what are the 3 most common mistakes?
1. Being too Pushy – This is definitely a turn off to a potential customer. All too often the salesperson is so eager to make the sale that they get way to ahead of themselves and push the customer into a corner.
Being too pushy can make the customer feel almost attacked or pressured to buy the product. You don’t want this to be the outcome of your sales tactic. You want the customer to be at ease when they are being pitched to and more importantly, receptive.
2. Offering the Wrong Type of Upsell – When offering an upsell to a customer it is important that the upsell is something that is in relation to the sale you just made on the bigger ticket item.
An example would be a person who just bought a digital camera. Offering a memory card will fit perfectly in with the initial sale and is something they will need.
It’s important that they want your service and are aware of all the reasons they need it. You don’t want to upsell something that has no relation to the product at all, it has to relate in some fashion.
3. Not Being Persistent – Yes there is a way to upsell and be persistent without being pushy.
It all relies on the information you are relaying. It needs to be convincing and something the customer believes. If you go out and just start spouting off some sales pitch, it could seem unconvincing and forced. You want to have conviction in your speech so the customer believes what you are saying and ultimately wants the product.
All of the above sales mistakes can be avoided if you’re properly trained. You need to practice upselling techniques and learn some tactics that can enhance your skills in sales.

4 Easy Ways to Start Upselling Today
Upselling can be a huge profitable marketing effort by your company.
The problem…
Most companies don’t perform the action of upselling whole-heartedly. They rely on skimpy ads to do the work for them hoping that customers will just click on them.
Much more is involved in getting your customer to want to buy an additional product.
Here’s some easy ways to start upselling today:
1) If your product is one that needs to be shipped to a customer, put a coupon for the upsell product in with the order.
Make it a great deal, or a huge discount and your customer will be more likely to follow up and want to place another order.
2) Once you have established a full-fledged customer, make sure you treat them right by sending them a thank email for their purchase.
Also include the option for them to sign up for your newsletter as well. You could even slip in upsell promotions inside the email and newsletters.
3) Target your customers with emails about special promotions.
If you sell electronics, send out an email with a special two for one offer or any new deals or discounts related to the product they purchased in the recent past. This takes serious organization to gather this information, but with a good auto-responder and database it can be done, and done effectively to bring in more sales.
4) If you have specials and deals, display them prominently on your website so the customer cannot miss them.
It can be on the front page or before the checkout page. The strategy of placing an upsell item before the completion of the checkout has been known to be the most effective form of marketing. Customers are more likely to consider the product and how it will enhance their initial purchase.
Letting your customers know that you have valuable products that they need, will actually work to your advantage. They will see this as you being a helpful and honest business that they will want to do business with again and again.
